Red and Green

Its everywhere right now, all around us in the media, in stores, in the office, on cards. No matter what faith you serve or holiday you celebrate, you can't avoid seeing it: the combination of red and green.
One of the reasons its an eye-catching combination is because the two colors are so unlike one another. When they are juxtaposed their contrast is all the more startling.
Green is the easiest color for the eyes to process. Nature bedecks much of herself in green, and we relax and are restored in its presence.
Red is an exciting, alarming color. That's why its used on stop signs, fire extinguishers and emergency signs. Red demands our attention.
An interplay of peaceful rest and dynamic stimulation occurs when these two are juxtaposed. In correct proportions, the result is just enough tension to excite while remaining balanced.
The holiday season isn't the only time you see the coupling of red and green. You find it abundantly in your kitchen and in nature. In less bold and pure states this classic complementary harmony is one of the most popular in interior design. Look at any home decor magazine and you're sure to find shades of mint, sage, and forest green combined with pinks, mauves, and maroons.
