I’ve been fascinated with color and movement for as long as I can remember. I’m enthralled by how colors undulate, vibrate, and move me emotionally. Often, after working with color for an hour or more, I’m different in some way: lifted, or calmed, more energetic, or more alive. I sense color as a kind of conscious presence that works with me, letting me know what it wants to do on the canvas or page.

Upon receiving my first box of 24 crayons as a child, I began drawing and painting in order to capture beauty with the movement of color, long before I knew that’s what I was doing. This early love stemmed into other artistic interests such as photography, music, and writing. In the early 1980s I received my BFA in Visual Communications and became a freelance illustrator, designer, and writer. I’ve published five books and countless articles about color and design and taught classes throughout the US. As a nationally recognized color expert, I wrote and designed The Beader’s Color Palette, which won the Library Journal award, Best Craft Book 2009.

I want my art to evoke what I feel when beauty embraces me, and when the mystery of life – and our extraordinary world – captures my imagination and I’m swept into ineffable wonder. When I find myself unable to use words to convey what I want to express, color and movement are always a breath away, inviting me to dance and play with them.
