I fell in love with the name first: Asarabacca! With 5 rhythmic syllables and all those short “a” sounds, it’s so fun to say out loud. The kidney-shaped leaves are unusually gorgeous. Asarabacca is a type of evergreen plant that grows in Europe and Asia, and its roots are used to create medicine. This medicine woman knows the secrets of healing and of Asarabacca.
Original medium: Mixed Media on Wood Panel
These mixed media pieces on wood evolve from my fascination with plants. A certain plant catches my imagination, I listen to it with my whole being, with all my senses. Out of this I sense a human-like deva or being that attends the plant. Or sometimes, the human image comes to me first, and after that I sense the plant that she/he connects with. I then use every medium available – colored pencil, charcoal, ink, acrylic, markers, oil, and pastel – to bring them to life on a wood panel.
