Blue Spirit
I don’t think of these biomorphic beings as being part of our dimension, but this one is. This is the first time in this series I’ve used lighter colors and a horizon line, and I’m thrilled with the sense of space they create. The journey that Blue Spirit has made to the canvas can be followed by the pale yellow arc swooping down from the upper right.

As I compose the “beings” in this series, in my mind I listen to them tell me (without words) about themselves. It’s difficult to describe this internal process because it involves senses that we don’t often use day-to-day. Therefore I use color, light, shadow, and shape to give them a visual life. Each piece involves a complex, multi-stepped process of meditation, dreaming, sketching, several A.I. tools, and Photoshop compositing. Then I draw and paint by hand using ink, pencil, chalk, pastel, and charcoal. When finished, I feel like I’ve spent intimate time with a dear, close friend, and I’ve changed: I have become more because of our time together.
