If you watched the TV show “Lost,” you may remember this incidental character towards the end. I don’t remember her, but I like her wide open face and the tilt of her head. In this portrait I sense hesitancy leaning towards understanding.
I created this by allowing puddles of water to help me move ink and watercolor about into a portrait, with as little ‘interference” on my part, which is much easier said than done! So much of art is knowing when to stop, especially when working with water.
Original medium: Watercolor and ink on paper
The human face is a thing of exquisite beauty. I find beauty in the openness of heart people sometimes wear in their expression. I find it in the depth of lived experience: Faces where I sense both tragedy and majesty, wound and healing, the lost and the divine. Faces are the landscape of the Soul. I never tire of aiming to depict that sense of Soul – and humanity – I sense in a face.
