In Cocoa Beach, Florida, where I grew up, I often turned to the ocean for joy and solace. In this highly stylized drawing I wanted to evoke what I felt when floating off-shore awaiting each new swell: the eager anticipation of a force unseen – a power much more vast than myself … and that moment when I’m at its mercy, and must completely let go and trust.

I thrill at the stark contrasts I can create with the blackest of black charcoal on white paper. Using smooth light-to-dark gradients and sensual organic curves, I focus on elegant compositions that are simultaneously representational and abstract. I love creating mysterious pieces that engender wonder, causing me (and the viewer) to ask What is this? What’s going on here? The answers are as varied as our imagination.
