Mystery's Mystery
Appearing from a distance, these mysterious orbs feel like vortexes to me. As they emerged individually from my imagination and hands, the three made it clear they wanted to be together, creating a wholeness. As I sit with them, they speak to me of possibility, imagination, and creativity. As abstract as all that is, what delights me most is the sensual movement of folding, swirling, vibrant color juxtaposed against the straight, lightening like jolt of yellow shooting in from the left.
For the pieces in this series, “Beings of Color and Light,” I combine colored pencils, pastels, Inktense and watercolor washes, because they create a delicate translucence, allowing me to layer vibrant tones, while creating smooth gradients and transitions.

As I compose the “beings” in this series, in my mind I listen to them tell me (without words) about themselves. It’s difficult to describe this internal process because it involves senses that we don’t often use day-to-day. I summon a state of "betweenness," seeing with eyes that look beyond what I know. I then use color, light, shadow, and shape to give them visual life. Each piece involves a multi-stepped process of listening, meditation, dreaming, sketching, several AI tools, and Photoshop compositing. Then I draw and paint by hand using ink, pencil, chalk, pastel, and charcoal. When finished, I feel like I’ve spent intimate time with a dear, close friend, and I’ve changed: I have expanded and become more because of our time together.
